The 2011 Ford F-150 is getting the most extensive powertrain overhal in the truck's history. For 2011, there are four new engine choices, all coupled with a revised and upgraded six-speed automatic transmission. The lineup will be at least 20 percent more efficient than in previous years. Ford is the first automaker to equip its entire full-size pickup lineup with fuel efficient six-speed transmissions as standard equipment.

3.5L Twin-Turbocharged EcoBoost V6

The 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine specially tuned for truck application joins the revamped powertrain lineup for the 2011 Ford F-150. This engine incorporates established heavy-duty truck diesel engine technologies of turbocharging and direct fuel injection in a gasoline engine. This new EcoBoost delivers 90 percent peak torque at 2,000 rpm and continues across a wide rpm band, making it ideally suited for trailer towing and other truck applications. The rigid testing protocol for this engine was developed from the profile of the harshest-use F-150 customer. This profile was used as the baseline for extensive computer analysis, which was then backed by hardware tests and in-vehicle validation. All tests together replicate more than 1.6 million miles of customer use.

3.7L Ti-VCT V6

The award-winning V6 engine joins the lineup for the 2011 F-150. The 3.7-liter includes several upgrades that have been specifically engineered for truck duty, such as the forged-steel crankshaft, cast-iron exhaust manifolds and a die-cast aluminum oil pan. Twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) adjusts the valvetrain in microseconds for more low-speed torque and better fuel economy than non-VCT-equipped engines.

5.0L 32-Valve DOHC V8

The 5.0-liter 32-valve DOHC V8 has been engineered to optimize it for the harsh duty cycle truck customers demand. The intake cams, for example, are tuned to produce more low-end torque, and the engine features cast exhaust manifolds. An added oil cooler helps extend the life of the oil to 10,000-mile intervals while several heat shields have been added to manage underhood temperatures.

6.2L V8

Ford's rich racing heritage inspires the new 6.2-liter V8 engine for the 2011 F-150. Similar engines serve as the base engine for the 2011 F-Series Super Duty and helped power the F-150 SVT Raptor R to a podium finish in the grueling Baja 1000.

Six-Speed Transmission

For the first time, a six-speed automatic transmission is standard in F-150 on all engines. Several available enhancements have been added to the proven 6R80 transmission to help F-150 customers tow more easily, including SelectShift with both progressive range select and manual functions.

Progressive range select allows the customer to reduce the range of available gears while in Drive. When the customer taps down into range select mode, the display shows the available gears and highlights the current gear state. This feature allows the driver to limit the use of upper gears when heavily loaded or while towing on grades.

With SelectShift, customers can get full manual function by pulling the shift lever into "M" for manual mode and then select the gear desired by pressing the "+" button for upshifts or the "-" button for downshifts. The control system will hold that gear for a full manual transmission feel.
