Specs at a Glance
Now solidly in its fourth generation of production, the Ford Expedition is arguably the best choice for those looking for a truck-based full-size SUV. It's remarkably sturdy, with body-on-frame construction, robust ground clearance, muscular engine, and available four-wheel drive that would not betray it during the most treacherous weather and driving conditions. The Expedition enters the 2021 model year with several trim configurations. Two of them are the base-level XL STX; and the Platinum Max, which is essentially the top-level model with an extended wheelbase (thus the "Max" suffix).
Performance
Both models are powered by Ford's 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, pinned to a 10-speed automatic transmission for smooth gear shifting. The output varies, though; for better acceleration, go with the Platinum Max, which V6 pumps out 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque. By comparison, the XL STX's engine puts out 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. With standard rear-wheel drive—power is sent from the front-placed engine to the rear wheels, creating close to a 50/50 weight balance—the XL STX has a maximum towing capacity of 9,300 lbs. On the Platinum Max, maximum towing capacity is lower, at 9,000 lbs., regardless of drivetrain choice.
Appearance
The typical 2021 Expedition has a wheelbase of 122.5 inches. With the Max version, it is expanded to 131.6 cubic feet and consequently creates more interior space. Notably, the XL STX is the only model not available in a Max variant. So, for more interior space, go for the Platinum Max. The models share exterior features such as fog lamps, quad-beam reflector headlights, side rails, running boards, hitch receiver, and large, 18-inch alloy wheels. As the range-topping model, though, the Platinum stands out with features such as its satin aluminum and chrome-accented grille, panoramic roof, and crossbars on the side rails.
Features
Even at the base XL STX trim level, the 2021 Expedition is loaded. The SYNC 3 multimedia system uses a large, 8-inch touchscreen to merge infotainment elements such as a six-speaker AM/FM stereo system, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, voice recognition, Bluetooth for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, and a trial subscription to SiriusXM Radio. In addition, there are four USB ports—two in the front, two facing the second-row seats—for hooking up mobile devices.
Also included are remote keyless entry, a rearview camera, push-button engine start, and a tri-zone automatic climate control system. At the Platinum level, the Expedition has a massively enhanced SYNC 3 system with the addition of features such as HD Radio technology, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, wireless device charging, voice-activated navigation. In addition, remote keyless entry is upgraded to proximity keyless entry. A 360-degree camera system replaces the rearview camera with rear parking sensors. The rearview mirror gains auto-dimming ability and a garage-door opener.
