Car Not Accelerating

If you are driving your Ford one day and notice that the accelerator seems slow to respond, you naturally start to wonder what may be wrong with your car. As with many car problems, preventative maintenance is key to keeping minor issues from turning into larger ones. Many acceleration-related issues can be avoided by bringing your car in for regular service. However, if you haven't had the car inspected in a while and start to notice acceleration issues, these four problems may be to blame.

Dirty Oxygen Sensor or Mass Air Flow Sensor

Your car's engine has several sensors that allow it to function properly. Two critical sensors are the oxygen sensor and the mass airflow (MAF) sensor. These sensors are separate parts, but they work collectively to ensure that the engine has the right amount of air it requires to operate. The oxygen sensor and MAF can either break or become too dirty to regulate airflow to the engine, jeopardizing its performance and triggering the "Check Engine" light to come on. The vehicle's fuel economy can also decline if the sensors are dirty or broken.

Malfunctioning Throttle Position Sensor

The throttle position sensor is another vital part of the car's mechanical system. The throttle position sensor checks the angle of the throttle valve opening in the engine. Based on the opening angle's position, the sensor provides information to the computer in the engine that gives it instructions for performance. The sensor won't read the information on the throttle position correctly if it gets dirty, which ultimately impacts the car's performance.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The fuel filter is designed to trap sludge, pollen, dirt, and other debris before entering the engine. If the fuel filter's surface gets dirty, impurities can get through and accumulate in the engine and fuel lines. The engine's performance is compromised as a result, and eventually, the clog will keep adequate amounts of fuel from entering the engine.

Dirty Air Filter

Another essential filter for engine performance is the air filter. Cleaning the air filter regularly can prevent many problems that affect the engine and the car's acceleration. However, if you go too long between air filter changes, the engine doesn't get enough air, which interferes with the vehicle's performance and can't speed up as quickly as it should. The owner's manual provides specific details on when to change the filter.

Federal EV Tax Credit & Home Charger Incentive Changes

Federal EV Tax Credit
Federal tax incentives that support electric vehicle ownership are undergoing important changes. The Clean Vehicle Credit, which offers up to $7,500 in tax savings, is currently scheduled to expire on September 30, 2025, unless extended by Congress. In addition, the federal tax credit for installing a home EV charger will expire on June 30, 2026. If you’re planning to purchase an EV or install a charger at your Phoenix home, understanding these deadlines can help you take full advantage of the benefits.
