America’s best-selling three-row SUV, the Ford Explorer, returns with numerous changes inside and out. From revised looks to an updated MyFord Touch interface and version of the Mustang’s EcoBoost four-cylinder added to the engine lineup, the 2016 Explorer should be at the top of your consideration list. It even adds a new top-of-the-line Platinum trim that oozes luxury for those who desire the crème de la crème.

Explorer’s former three-bar grille has been replaced with an attractive new grille design that feels more connected to the headlights. Ford says all five trims of the SUV (Base, XLT, Limited, Sport and Platinum) get their own unique variation of the grille, which offers greater distinction between models. The grille features active shutters that close at highway speeds to help reduce drag. In back, the taillights have been raised off the bodywork, which also assists in improving aerodynamics.

The front and back mounted cameras now feature segment-first washers, which ensure clear visibility (and the convenience of not having to view a dirty camera screen). Other new technology adds and upgrades include new smart-charging USB ports; enhanced active park assist with perpendicular park assist, park-out assist and semi-automatic parallel parking; an updated, easier-to-use infotainment system; hands-free liftgate; and industry-first 500-watt Sony Audio System (Platinum trim) that offers Live Acoustics and Clear Phase technology, which brings home theater sound quality to the road.

On the interior, the seats have been improved to provide greater comfort and enhanced backseat legroom. Multi-contoured nirvana leather is now offered too, so those who want an extra luxury element have a great new option.

Under the hood, an optional new turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine replaces last year’s four-cylinder. It pumps out 270 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. The standard engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 with 290 horsepower and the Sport and Platinum get a turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with 365 horsepower.

The all-new Explorer Platinum trim offers a high level of refinement with exclusive additions like brushed-aluminum and satin-finished ash wood trim on the door panels and instrument panel. There’s also a heated leather steering wheel with wood trim and - for the first time ever on a Ford - a brushed-aluminum oval badge on the center of the steering wheel. Standard technologies like a 10-inch digital display, rain-sensing wipers and lane-keeping assist are highlights, too.
