In the halcyon days of SUVs, they were based off of a brand’s formidable truck lineup. But these days, the platforms are usually derived from cars, hence “crossovers.” But the 2016 Ford Explorer, recently updated for this model year, is no such beast. Large and brawny, it backs up its legacy of beast mode with some pretty impressive options.
New for the 2016 model year include two carry over engines—including a 2.0-liter option that boasts 270 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque—all of which promise beastly performance regardless of trim. Also new is the touted Terrain Management System, which allows you to control how your AWD system operates, depending on the road surface. It can be tuned for mud, snow, and off-road, to name a few!
