AAA reports that drivers spend approximately $3 billion a year on vehicle repairs associated with driving over potholes. And, along with wreaking havoc on cars, potholes and other road hazards cause discomfort for drivers and passengers. To minimize the financial hardship on those of us who encounter diabolical potholes, Ford has been testing cars on a new 1.2-mile track that includes replicas of insane potholes and other road hazards from around the world.

The new potholed course is a part of Ford’s 50-mile test track, which is based in Lommel, Belgium. One new technology that has resulted from the testing is Ford’s all-new Continuous Control Damping with Pothole Mitigation system. It can detect when a tire has fallen into a pothole and adjusts the suspension accordingly to protect its components from harm. The new technology is scheduled to debut on the brand-new 2017 Fusion V6 Sport. Other Ford technologies also aid drivers dealing with pothole issues. For example, if a tire puncture occurs Ford’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System can detect air pressure loss and alert drivers.
