Specs at a Glance
The 2025 Ford Explorer is one of the most popular SUVs in its class. Families love the Explorer's impressive versatility. This vehicle provides ample space for passengers and cargo and is loaded with today's hottest features. Let's look at how the Explorer Active compares to the Explorer Platinum.
Performance
Both trims come standard with a 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. It's rated to develop a stout 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic transmission helps ensure maximum performance. While rear-wheel drive is standard, you can opt for an adventurous 4WD system. You can trust the Explorer to tow up to 5,300 pounds when properly equipped.
In contrast to the Explorer Active, the Explorer Platinum gives you access to an optional powertrain. Ford's 3.0-liter EcoBoost six-cylinder engine packs a muscular 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque. Aside from promoting quicker acceleration, the extra brawn also raises the SUV's maximum towing capacity to 5,600 pounds.
Appearance
The Explorer Active looks far more stylish than the typical entry-level trim. Attractive 18-inch alloy wheels and signature LED headlights come standard. You can choose from several head-turning exterior colors, including Agate Black Metallic and Star White Metallic Tri-Coat.
While the Explorer Platinum shares some similar stylish cues, there are also some noticeable differences. Larger 20-inch alloy wheels give the SUV a commanding stance, and a unique grille helps set the Platinum trim apart.
Features
Most drivers will be more than happy with the Explorer Active's list of standard equipment. Its new Google-based Ford Digital Experience infotainment system is a definite highlight. It features a 13.2-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone connectivity. Creature comforts, such as heated front seats and three-zone automatic climate control, make the Active trim even more rewarding. Other standard features include an onboard 5G Wi-Fi hotspot, keyless start, and a digital gauge cluster.
The Platinum trim offers more premium amenities. You'll appreciate its ventilated front seats with Active Motion massage functions when the weather heats up. A 980-watt Bang & Olufsen premium audio system takes your music-listening experience to the next level. The Explorer Platinum also includes a wireless phone charger, leather upholstery, and a twin-panel sunroof.
