We know that safety is one of the most important things on a driver’s mind when buying a car, if not the most important. Knowing that a car not only has the ability to help you avoid accidents, but also to keep you protected if an accident does occur, certainly offers a lot of peace of mind. That’s why the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s annual crashworthiness evaluations are so important.

The 2017 Ford Fusion was recently put through moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints tests by the IIHS, and it came out with top scores in all categories of the crash test assessment. However, to earn the IIHS’ highest honors – Top Safety Pick+ – it also had to meet the institute’s standards for frontal collision avoidance. Fusion did so with its optional front crash prevention system, which features new active braking technology. The system received the top score of “Superior” and also includes a forward collision warning component that meets the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s standards.

“The 2017 Ford Fusion is our most advanced car yet and we’re proud to see it recognized by NHTSA and the IIHS for its safety performance too,” said Bill Strickland, chief program engineer, Ford Motor Company. “Great new features include a pedestrian detection system and hands-free parallel and perpendicular parking capability, as well as existing optional lane-keeping assist and Blind Spot Information System with cross-traffic alert.”
