Soon the Chevy Bolt and Tesla Model 3 will have to share the spotlight with a contender from the Blue Oval. Many have been wondering if Ford planned to bring an affordable 200-mile electric car to market and that question was recently answered by Ford CEO Mark Fields, who stated that it's something the company is developing for.
The statement was made during a first-quarter earnings call in which he also said that Ford is paying attention to what competitors have been announcing about their forthcoming EVs. He even declared, "[W]e want to make sure we are among the best or the leaders in those areas."
Ford announced that it would be investing $4.5 billion into electrified vehicles near the end of last year and the automaker plans to use that money to significantly enhance its portfolio of electric and hybrid cars by the year 2020. However, it sounds like a new 200-mile EV may be coming much sooner than this. WHAT ABOUT TAX CREDITS?
When Ford's new EV does arrive in the Valley, sources say the automaker will probably have many more federal tax credits available than any other automaker, meaning shoppers would be more likely to benefit from the full $7,500 federal discount.
Cheat Sheet Autos estimated that Ford could have up to 110,000 credits left, while GM may only have 80,000, Nissan only 70,000 and Tesla as little as 60,000.
