It's late at night and you're on the freeway when the person next to you suddenly drifts out of their lane. You steer away to avoid being hit and your right two tires roll off the road. While your first reaction might be to whip your vehicle back onto solid ground, it's not the correct way to recover. Every year, thousands of people die and get injured when improperly maneuvering their vehicles during tire rollovers, so Camelback Ford would like to share some safety tips that will help you safely get back on the road in this situation.

  1. Ignore your instinct to immediately steer back on the road. Instead, smoothly release pressure from the gas pedal and do not hit your brakes, unless you are in a situation where you might run into something or are driving downhill.
  2. Let your car slow down to about 35 mph and gently adjust your steering wheel so that you're driving parallel to the road. If only one tire is off the pavement, slightly turn the steering wheel so that both right (or left) tires are off the road, and then proceed to lineup your vehicle as described above.
  3. Next, turn on your hazard lights and then very gently steer back toward the road. When we say very gently, we mean not to turn the steering wheel more than about five degrees, any more than this and you could lose traction and spin out.

These steps may sound simple, but in an emergency driving situation it's easy to act instinctively, rather than mindfully. So, stay calm, take your time and remember that if you rush to get back on the road you could get into an accident.
