Ford Motor Company is teaming up with Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Detroit Newspapers in Education to offer an online curriculum and scholarship contest in honor of African American contributions throughout history.
Featuring a 16-page online supplement, teacher guide, and classroom poster, the Ford Freedom Award educational program aims to highlight important works by and on behalf of African Americans. In addition to the supplement, students will participate in an essay contest as part of the African American Men of Courage program. Students will be asked to describe how they demonstrate qualities of courage in their everyday lives, and how these attributes can lead to success in their personal lives and their community.
“African American history is literally filled with ‘Men of Courage,’” said Juanita Moore, president and CEO, Wright Museum. “The thousands of schoolchildren across Michigan who participate in this year’s essay contest will be inspired by their endeavors, which demonstrate dedication, hard work, and the courage to break through barriers to achieve one’s grandest dreams.”
Contest winners will be presented with scholarships at the Ford Freedom Awards in Detroit on May 17.
