For the first time ever, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has evaluated both crew- and extended-cab versions of several well-known trucks in a small overlap front crash test. Only one model excelled – the 2016 Ford F-150 – which earned a top score of “Good” in all measures of the test for both its SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles. As a result, F-150 was the only truck to receive a Top Safety Pick award.

In addition to the small overlap front crash test, the F-150 SuperCab and SuperCrew also earned top scores in every other category of testing as well, including moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraints and seats. The results of the small overlap front crash test (seen in the graph below) paint a clear picture of the F-150 SuperCab’s strong safety performance. Because it had already been evaluated prior to this new round of tests, the F-150 SuperCrew is not included in the graph, but it did receive top scores.

As for the competition, all earned the lowest rating of “Poor” when it came to lower leg and foot protection. Startlingly, the Rams really didn’t fare well, also receiving “Poor” ratings for having structure issues when crash tested.

The evidence is clear for truck buyers here in Phoenix and across the nation: If you’re in need of a pickup that’ll keep you well protected in the event of a collision, as well as one that’s built tough, the 2016 Ford F-150 is a top choice.
