Last month on Apr. 16 and 17, Ford celebrated the Mustang's 50th anniversary by exhibiting the legendary muscle car on top of the Empire State Building. If this story rings a bell, it's because you may remember that the very first Mustang was introduced to the world in the exact same fashion five decades ago on the same dates. The amazing recreation of this feat took a full team of technicians, as well as many long days and nights of work to pull off.

"Like all good craftsmen, our team is measuring twice and cutting once to make sure we can get this Mustang up in the elevators. Like the team that did this in 1965, the current crew visited the Empire State Building before starting and took careful measurements," said Mustang Chief Engineer, Dave Pericak.

You read that right. To get the new 2015 Ford Mustang convertible - on sale soon in Phoenix! - up 1,000 feet above Manhattan (to the 86th floor open-air observatory deck topping one of the world's most iconic landmarks), technicians had to very carefully "cut" the car into sections. Two early prototypes of the Mustang's body shell were used to prepare for the event and determine exactly where the vehicle would need to be incised.

When the final display car was split into segments, special racks were used to take all the pieces up the building's elevators, which include a freight elevator and two separate passenger elevators to get from the loading dock to the top floor. Once everything was transported, a crew had to piece it all back together in a jigsaw-puzzle like way, and the process of getting it reassembled was pretty intense. Check out the time-lapse video above to see how it was done! Then get ready because soon enough the 2015 Ford Mustang will be on sale in Maricopa County!
