If you've ever heard the Beach Boy's "Surfin' Safari," you may remember a reference to the Woodie, a unique type of wagon first developed in the 1930s, which featured wood framework and lots of room for surfboards and such. In a recent episode of "Jay Leno's Garage," the crew didn't go on a surfin' safari, but they did enjoy a uniquely Californian experience driving a 1937 Ford Woodie restomod through LA.

To start, for those of you who don't know, a restomod is a restored vehicle that appears to be nearly stock, but includes late-model parts like an updated suspension system, engine, modern convenience features, etc.

The Woodies featured in the video below show off excellent craftsmanship, courtesy of the guys at Hot Rods & Hobbies in Signal Hill, Calif. The model Jay took out on the road had a 5.0-liter V-8, power steering, disc brakes, four mufflers, and new front and rear suspensions. When it comes to cosmetics, the wood was fitted to look exactly like the original version and the interior offered a uniquely "pleasant environment" when commuting, according to Jay. He also noted that the '37 Ford Woodie restomod handled nicely and had a high seating position similar to that of a modern SUV. Check out the video to learn more!
